Siemens announced today it was awarded a $28 million contract from Turner Construction Company to design, supply and install a baggage handling system as part of the renovation of Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport. The contract also includes the operation and maintenance of the system for two years.
Siemens will provide the turnkey integration of the mechanical, electrical and software systems for a complete baggage handling system, including belt conveyors, catwalk and miscellaneous hardware. The Terminal 2 renovation project at SFO consists of 14 new domestic gates.
"We appreciate the vote of confidence of our partner, Turner Construction, in turning to Siemens for this important project. Of course, we think they made the right choice given our proven experience with these types of system projects, our ready availability of experienced resources and our overall financial strength to manage a project of this size.” said Lee Seward, Vice President Baggage and Cargo/ Parcels Logistics with Siemens.
This baggage system consists of approximately 9,000 linear feet of belt conveyor with about 550 drives that feed four explosive detection system (EDS) machines. Additionally, there are six makeup devices and four claim devices. The project is expected to start in September, 2009, with delivery to the customer in late 2010.
“Over the past five years the airport has experienced phenomenal growth in passenger traffic as well as the addition of three new domestic carriers. The Airport Commission authorized the renovation to better serve their passengers and carriers. We have confidence that Siemens will be a significant contributor to the success of this renovation project,” said Victor Perry, Project Executive Turner Construction.
