Automatic Train Control System for Maximum Flexibility in Modern Mass Transit

The transport needs in booming conurbations are continuously increasing. People are constantly on the move, whether on their way to work, to leisure or educational facilities or while shopping or returning home. Efficient mass transit systems are therefore one of the most important keys to maximum mobility in cities and large urban areas worldwide, promoting the urban and regional economic development. Trainguard® MT is the Siemens answer to these severe requirements of booming megacities' transportation needs and offers a new standard of automation in different levels.

The performance of mass transit systems is mostly dependent on the performance of the automatic train control (ATC) system deployed. With increasing automation, the responsibility for operations management is passing from the driver and operator to the system. An ATC system comprises functions for monitoring, operation and control of the entire operational process. It can feature different degrees of automation such as manual train operation with a driver, semi-automated train operation and unattended operation. An ATC system displays the current driving instructions on the cab console and supervises the permissible train speed continuously. Color-light signals are therefore no longer required. The functional scope of automatic train control systems is focussing an ever-growing contribution towards cost reduction.
The major advantages of a modern ATC system are:

Safety
System Performance including Availability
Cost-effectiveness
Maintainability
Upgradability
Scalability
Reliability
Flexible refurbishment and migration solutions

That's how authorities should work with, to increase attractiveness, safety and efficiency of their Mass Transit Systems.
