In order to provide trouble-free rail services across Europe, the existing national train protection and train control systems need to be replaced with an European train control system. In 1996 therefore in Directive 96/48/EG the foundation was laid for the introduction of the interoperable European Train Control System (ETCS).
Together with the mobile radio system GSM-R and the standard European Traffic Management Systems (ETMS), ETCS forms the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
The Siemens ETCS solution is called Trainguard With the Trainguard family, Siemens offers innovative products and solutions for both the migration to, and first-time equipping of lines with, ETCS.
