Contract from Canada:
Calgary order 33 light rail vehicles from Siemens
Erlangen, Dec 22, 2004
Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) is to deliver 33 type SD 160 light rail transit (LRT) vehicles to the transit company of the City of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. The contract is worth around 74 million euro. It will expand the existing LRT fleet to a total of 149 vehicles and meet the demand fueled by rapidly increasing ridership in Calgary over the past several years. Delivery of the first LRT units is due to start in the spring of 2006.
The new two-car high-floor LRT vehicles have steel bodies, are designed for a top speed of 80 km/h (about 50 mph) and will benefit from a faster acceleration thanks to the use of AC three-phase propulsion technology. Called the “Ctrain” in Calgary, the standard-gauge vehicles offer seats for 64 and standing room for 240 passengers. They are 24.8 meters long and 2.6 meters wide.
Between 1995 and 2004, transit ridership increased by 43 percent. During the same period, Calgary’s population grew by 25 percent. Over 210,000 passengers ride the “Ctrain” every weekday.
This order marks the seventh consecutive contract that Calgary has awarded to Siemens since 1981. With its network of over 35 track kilometers and 34 stops, the city is Siemens’ biggest customer for LRT vehicles in all of North America.
The vehicles will be manufactured at Siemens Transportation’s plant in Sacramento, CA, USA, which is also building 70% low-floor S70 units for the U.S. cities of San Diego, CA and Charlotte, NC.
