New light rail orders in the U.S.A. with a volume of €103 million Siemens to supply LRVs to St. Louis, Houston and San Diego

Siemens has received three follow-up orders in the U.S.A. for the supply of light rail vehicles. The transit companies for the cities of St. Louis, Houston and San Diego have ordered a total of 36 vehicles. The total volume is worth about €103 million.

St. Louis, where 65 Siemens LRVs are already in service, has placed an order for 22 Type SD 460 units to operate on the city's expanded transit network. Delivery is due to start in 2004.

Likewise in 2004, eleven Type S 70 vehicles are to be delivered to San Diego. This city in southern California already operates a fleet of 123 LRVs from Siemens and intends to use the new units for its extended system as well.

Houston, Texas is also on the order books with three more Type S 70 LRVs in addition to the 15 units already ordered from Siemens. Siemens Transportation Systems, the railway technology group of Siemens AG, was given the order last year to build a low-floor light rail system in Houston. The 12-km-long transit system is being constructed by Siemens as a turnkey project and is scheduled to be handed over to the customer in December 2003.

The Type S 70 LRV ordered by the transit companies in Houston and San Diego represents a new modular low-floor LRV generation capable of transporting more than 200 passengers at speeds up to 100 kilometers per hour. The vehicles will be built and supplied by the U.S. subsidiary Siemens Transportation Systems (STS), Inc., in Sacramento, California. With 700 units ordered or already in service, Siemens is the leading manufacturer of light rail vehicles in North America.

The Transportation Systems Group (TS) of Siemens AG is one of the leading international suppliers to the railways industry. As single source supplier and system integrator, the Group combines in its business segments Automation & Power, Rolling Stock, Turnkey Systems and Integrated Services all the expertise necessary to cover the spectrum from signaling and control systems to traction power supplies, as well as rolling stock for mass transit, regional and main line services.
