China:Siemens to supply signaling and control systems for Nanjing's first metro line Order underscores its leading position in the future-oriented market of mass transit automation

A consortium consisting of Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) and the Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Technology has received the order to install signaling and control equipment for the first metro line in Nanjing, a major urban center in eastern China with a multi-million population. As worldwide market leader in the field of rail automation, TS is strengthening its position in mass transit automation in the growth market of China.

The Nanjing Metro Corporation plans to put six new metro and light rail lines totaling 139 track kilometers into operation. A high proportion of the value-added structure has to be provided locally. The present order concerns the first section of the North-South line to be built. Serving 16 metro stations, it will run through the center of Nanjing and also link up with the Nanjing Railway Station. This line section is due to be inaugurated in mid 2005. When completed, the complete line will cover a distance of about 39 kilometers.

Nanjing is not only a well-known university city, it is also the capital of the coastal province of Jiangshu and an important hub of China's heavy industry and petrochemical industry. With over six million inhabitants, the city has an acute need for modern, high-performance mass transit solutions.

Thanks to Siemens Ltd. China and the joint venture Siemens Signalling Company Ltd. in Xi'an, Siemens is well positioned on the Chinese market and constantly increasing its local competency and independence from external suppliers.

The Siemens solution for Nanjing is based on ultramodern systems which have proven reliable worldwide and which are already being used by metros in other major Asian cities, such as in Guangzhou, Bangkok, Inchon, and Kaohsiung. For example, the signaling equipment will feature the Sicas electronic interlocking and LZB 700 M type continuous automatic train control, while the control technology will make use of the modular Vicos system.
