Siemens modernizes interlocking at Braunschweig's main railway station

The Transportation Systems Group (TS) of Siemens AG is to build a new electronic interlocking in the main railway station of Braunschweig on behalf of German Rail (DB AG). The equipment will be controlled from the operations control center in Hanover. The order is worth more than €21 million and includes the renovation of 294 signals and 78 switches, as well as derailers and 184 track vacancy detection sections. The start of rehabilitation work is scheduled for June 2002 and the new equipment will start operating in the last quarter of 2003.

The modular interlocking, type EI S, will be based on Simis C computers (the fail-safe microcomputer system from Siemens). Interlockings designed in accordance with the Simis principle have proven their worth over many years of service. At the present time, over 3,000 Simis computers are being used worldwide. In this kind of system, computers work with at least two mutually independent, identically structured, and identically programmed microcomputers. This configuration ensures that the system has a maximum level of safety and availability.

The main railway station in Braunschweig is an important railway junction for urban transportation, interregional long-distance trains and freight traffic as well.
