Siemens: The first electric locomotive builder with certification for its two-system locomotive ES 64 U2 for Germany and Switzerland

The Eurosprinter electric locomotive ES 64 U2 – 102 sold by Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) to the Swiss transport and logistics service provider Hupac has been certified for unrestricted operation in Germany and Switzerland since April 2002. This makes Siemens the first rail vehicle manufacturer to offer modern high-performance AC three-phase locomotives for cross-border traffic between Germany and Switzerland.

For this purpose, the Hupac locomotive was equipped with the train protection systems of both countries and therefore meets the respective certification requirements. The Hupac fleet includes a total of three Siemens Eurosprinter locomotives. The other two units are still to be equipped with the German and Swiss ATP features. This makes these locomotives suitable to operate from the North Sea ports down to Switzerland and, after crossing the Alps, right up to the Italian border. For Hupac, this means that the operational processes are rationalized and speeded up while gaining cost-effectiveness and reliability.

The Eurosprinter locomotives have become a true success story for Siemens. More than 500 units have been ordered already, 400 alone for the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), 25 for German Rail (DB AG, 182 series) and 38 for Siemens Dispolok GmbH. Around 100 locomotives are already in daily use. Also Dispolok GmbH is presently fitting the German and Swiss ATP systems on several ES 64 U2. They will probably be available as rental locomotives for cross-border traffic from mid 2002.

Capable of developing a continuous rating of 6,400 kW and operating at a top speed of 230 kph, these multi-system locomotives from the Eurosprinter family are suitable for universal operation. They can also be deployed to haul passenger coaches in long-distance passenger service. The ES 64 U2 is being used not only in Germany and Switzerland, but also in Austria and Hungary. The two different voltage systems installed also permit operation on railway networks with 25 kV line voltage, making the ES 64 U2 suitable for use in various European countries.
The huge quantities ordered enable large-scale production. That means short delivery times and competitive prices for the customer. The experience gained up until now shows that the vehicles are characterized by high reliability and availability. Their modular design enables operational safety and facilitates maintenance.
