The municipal transport authorities of Vienna have ordered 25 new metro trains from a consortium headed by Siemens Transportation Systems (TS). The total value of the order amounts to EUR192 million. Siemens' share is 69 percent (about EUR133 mil-lion), with about EUR59 million going to the other consortium partners Bombardier and Elin.
The new Vienna metro trains are among the first metro vehicles to be built on the basis of the Mo.Mo modular product concept which was developed by Siemens Transportation Systems and is meanwhile being marketed all over the world. A prototype of the new train has been operating successfully in regular passenger service for the Vienna Underground since April 2001. These trains are to be built at Siemens SGP Transportation Systems in Vienna. The Siemens scope of supply includes all the train engineering and carbody construction, as well as part of the electrical equipment.
The first six-car metro trains will be delivered at the beginning of 2005 and all 25 vehicles are due to be in service by the end of 2008. This is Vienna's first order for a series of vehicles within the framework of master agreement signed in 1998 with an option for a further 60 trains. The new generation of metro vehicles for Vienna will operate on the underground lines U1 to Leopold and U2 to Aspern. Passenger comfort is a central feature of the new rolling stock and is realized in the form of a continuous 112-meter-long passenger area, which is monitored with CCTV equipment and enables a more uniform distribution of the passengers. Each train will have enough space to transport 900 passengers.
