The Romanian State Railway SNTFC “CFR Calatori” S.A. has placed a big order with the Transportation Systems Group (TS) of Siemens AG for 120 Desiro type two-car diesel multiple units. The contract is worth more than €300 million and calls not only for the supply of the rolling stock but also for actions to integrate production batches in Romania, to put the trains into revenue service, as well as to supply a spare parts package. An option for 104 more trains was also granted. The contract is based on a general agreement which both parties had signed at a meeting of the German-Romanian Cooperation Council in Berlin in July 2001, which was attended by Romania’s Prime Minister Adrian Nastase and Germany’s Economics Minister Werner Müller. For Siemens, this order marks the biggest single order received thus far from Romania.
“This order underscores once again the international competitiveness of Siemens’ modular vehicle designs”, explained Hans M. Schabert, Group Vice President responsible for the rolling stock business. “Of the diesel-powered Desiros alone, we’ve already sold about 450 trains or 900 cars in all to many different operators. And for the electric versions of the Desiro, we also have international orders for approximately 1,500 cars.”
Delivery of the first German-built Desiro trains for Romania will start as early as November 2002. In the further course of the project, the production of 63 trains and individual vehicle components will gradually be shifted to Romania. The delivery of the rolling stock is due to be completed in 2007. With 123 seats and standing room for 90 passengers and designed to operate at a top speed of 120 kph, these two-car multiple units will be deployed on routes in the Greater Bucharest area and between the cities of Arad, Oradea and Cluj.
Technically speaking, the trains for Romania belong to the Desiro family of modular Siemens regional rail vehicles and are identical with the Class VT642 currently being used by German Railway (DB AG) and by other rail operators both in Germany and abroad.
