Siemens secures order from Cathay Pacific worth over 118 million Euros for a cargo terminal at Hong Kong airport
Cathay Pacific Cargo Services Ltd. has engaged Siemens Mobility to build a cargo terminal at Hong Kong International Airport. The contract amounts to around 118 million Euros. The new terminal will handle 2.6 million metric tons of cargo per year. This can be increased to over four million metric tons when necessary in future phases. It will be one of the largest cargo installations in the world. Final handover of the project is scheduled for 2012.

The building has a volume of two million cubic meters and a floor space of 270,000 m². The cargo containers and pallets typically used for air freight can be housed in over 7,200 storage locations. Siemens is to supply and install the storage and conveying systems as well as the automation solution and the electrical equipment. A store-management and consignment computer from Siemens will control the highly automated installation. This aim is to minimize cargo handling times and waiting times for aircraft and trucks, and thus secure Hong Kong's leading position as one of the world's major cargo transfer centers. The cargo center will also be available to other airlines.

"With our proven expertise in logistics, automation and airport technology, we can offer our customer, Cathay Pacific, a tailor-made, highly efficient solution from a single source", commented Stefan Keh, head of Infrastructure Logistics at Siemens Mobility.

Following the letter and parcel sorting center and the baggage conveying system, this is now Siemens' third large-scale infrastructure-logistics solution at Hong Kong airport.

According to statements made by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the amount of air freight in Asia alone will grow by an average of more than six per cent per annum in the next four years. Chek Lap Kok (IATA code: HKG) is the international airport of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, and is home to the airline Cathay Pacific. Around 80 airlines, including 18 purely freight companies, fly to 140 destinations around the world from Hong Kong.
