Siemens ADB to supply airfield technology for Donetsk International Airport, Ukraine

The Siemens subsidiary N.V. ADB S.A., Zaventem, Belgium has received an order from the Regional Administration of Donetsk, Ukraine to supply airfield equipment to Donetsk International Airport (IATA code DOK) in the Ukraine. As general contractor, ADB will not only supply its own airfield lighting technology, but also radar systems, weather observation stations, noise and air pollution monitoring systems and Instrument Landing System (ILS) equipment. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2008.

The decision of the European Football Association (UEFA) to hold the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine means that extensive investment in infrastructure can be expected in the near future. Donetsk is one of the towns hosting the football matches and Donetsk International Airport is therefore being modernized so that it will be able to cope smoothly with the expected growth in the number of flights and passengers.

Siemens ADB will completely refurbish the runway (CAT III and CAT I) with flashing lights, approach lights and touchdown zone lighting. Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI), runway centerline and edge lights are also included in the scope of supply. The taxiways will be equipped with more than 1,000 LED lights and guidance signs. ADB will also install constant current regulators (type MCR³), transformers, cabling, individual lamp control systems (AGLAS) for stop bar, rapid exit and lead-on lights. Diesel generators, UPS and low voltage switchboards will make up the rest of the equipment supplied. An ADB ALCS (Airfield Lighting Control System) will be installed to control all airfield movements with the lighting systems.

ADB’s subcontractor - Secondary Radar Systems (Moscow, Russia) - will supply and install ILS, weather observation stations and noise and air pollution monitoring systems. INDRA, a Spanish company based in Madrid, is the subcontractor for surface movement radar. The Ukrainian company ATM Insight supports ADB with site management. All contracts include the supply and installation of equipment as well as commissioning and training.
