Benex decides in favor of regional trains from Siemens
Contract for the supply of six Desiro Classic trains worth about 16 million euros

Another chapter can be added to the success story of the Desiro Classic train from Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) now that Benex GmbH, a subsidiary of Hamburger Hochbahn AG, has decided to join the circle of satisfied customers who benefit from the reliable service of this multiple unit. As of September 2008, TS will start supplying Benex with six Desiro Classic trains worth a total of about 16 million euros. So far, more than 500 trains of this type have been delivered by TS to rail operators all over the world.

The multiple units, which are to be built in Siemens' Krefeld-Uerdingen plant, will be deployed by Benex in the Spree-Neisse railway network, which is operated by the Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH (ODEG) and connects the eastern German cities of Görlitz, Cottbus, Hoyerswerda, Bischofswerda and Zittau. These diesel-powered trains are built for a top speed of 120 km/h and offer maximum riding comfort for as many as 124 passengers.

In Germany, Desiro type diesel multiple units are already providing reliable service not only for the Deutsche Bahn but also for such regional railways as the Arriva subsidiary Vogtlandbahn, Kahlgrundbahn, Nordwestbahn, Ostmecklenburgische Eisenbahn and Lausitzbahn. Desiro Classics can also be found operating in the European countries of Bulgaria, Denmark, Greece, Austria, Romania and Hungary. And very soon this type of train will enter revenue service on the Oceanside – Escondido rail line in California.
