Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) is to supply 20 new Class 3800 electric freight locomotives to Queensland Rail (QR) in Australia. Including a spare parts package, the order is worth € 97 million. "This is the second major contract from Queensland Rail within three months", commented Joern F. Sens, TS Group Vice-President. The new locomotives will be developed and built by Siemens in Munich. Delivery is planned for 2008.
Queensland Rail is one of Australia’s largest rail operators and will use the new locomotives as traction units for its coal transportation services. With a transport capacity of 157 million metric tonnes of coal per year, QR is the market leader in Australia. QR is planning to increase capacity to over 250 million metric tonnes by 2010. The new locomotives will play an essential role, because fewer locomotives than before will be needed for the coal trains due to the high traction power of 4000 kW and the tare weight of 132 metric tonnes.
It was only in December of last year that Siemens received a € 150 million order from Queensland Rail to upgrade sixty Class 3100/3200 electric freight locomotives.
