Within Germany, Munich boasts one of the longest traditions of locomotive construction. Since 1908, Siemens has been cooperating with the Munich-based firm Maffei AG on the construction of electric locomotives, since 1909 they have also been working with local rivals Krauss. In 1931 both companies merged together to form “Lokomotivfabrik Krauss & Comp. – J.A. Maffei AG”. The name was changed to Siemens Krauss-Maffei Lokomotiven GmbH in 1999 and in 2001 the firm was assimilated into Siemens AG. Today some 525 employees (100 of which in engineering) and 16 apprentices work in the factory on Krauss-Maffei-Strasse. As a global leader, the plant in Allach is the center of competence for locomotive construction within the Transportation Systems Group. Know-how in the areas of steel construction, assembly and commissioning as well as research and development in the mechanical engineering area of locomotives is in particular demand here and that in addition to outstanding abilities in design and development. In this process, the performance profile of the production employees has expanded increasingly from its earlier core competence in the traditional mechanical professions (welders, fitters) to include electrical know-how in assembly and commissioning. Moreover, the factory is the only Siemens manufacturing location in Munich. For us, modularity is critical to the success of our electric and diesel-electric locomotives. With the Eurorunner and Eurosprinter product platforms, we have created two basic types which can be adapted to every task, from light to heavy goods transport, from light to high-speed passenger transport.
