Welcome to Munich

Munich, with its some 1.3 million inhabitants, is the third largest city in Germany and is one of the most important centers of industry, transportation and culture in the Federal Republic. Since 1949, the Bavarian capital has, along with Berlin, been a key company location for Siemens. The precursor companies of the modern Transportation Systems Group have been involved in the construction of locomotives here since 1838.

Munich is one of the traditional centers for German transportation technology, particularly in the areas of rail-bound, aviation and aerospace technology as well as automotive engineering. The construction of locomotives has been a fixture in the economic life of this Bavarian metropolis since 1838 and this city has succeeded over and over again in advancing development with the latest technologies. The Technical University too gives further weight to the city’s high-tech reputation.

Furthermore, Munich is one of the first stops in Germany for art and culture. Numerous museums attract visitors here including the Old and the New Pinakotheks as well as the Pinakothek of Modern Art, the Stuck Villa and the Lehnbach Museum. Equally popular, however, is the Deutsche Museum, one of the largest museums for the history of technology in the world. It is housed in the former trade fair halls on Theresienhöhe and has its own transport center on the themes of “Mobility and Technology”, “Journeys” and “City Traffic”.
