Progress on a historical foundation

For us everything started with Werner von Siemens in Berlin. Even in the 19th century his pioneering spirit was already pointing the way towards modern, entrepreneurial concepts. In 1879 he presented the first electrical locomotive here.

Further milestones included the first electrical tram in 1881 and an elevated railway project which he planned, brought into being and operated, all at his own risk.

Our current location in the former “Works for Signaling and Safety Systems, Berlin” is thus also a historical foundation for us because the factory established in 1953 supplied all the signaling systems for the German Reichsbahn.

In 1991 it was taken over by Siemens and was integrated into the Transportation Systems Group the very next year. By 1997 we had built from these old remains the most modern location for railway technology in the world.

Berlin is steeped in the history of technology
1847   First electromagnetic signal bell, which signaled the approach of a train to the crossing keeper
1879 First electrical locomotive in Berlin Moabit
1881   Maiden journey of the first public tram in Berlin Lichterfelde
~1902 Construction of the Berlin elevated railway and subway
1953 Establishment of the state company WSSB, Works for signaling and safety systems, Berlin
1992 Integration of WSSB into Siemens Transportation Systems
1998 Commissioning of the electronic mainline railway signal box (ESTW) Berlin-Rummelsburg and Berlin-Main Railway Station
2001 Commissioning of high-speed routes from Cologne to Frankfurt/Main with signaling technology from Berlin
